Directions North America 2026: Microsoft Redefines the Future of Business Central with AI, Agents, and Automation
Our Director of Business Development, Jonathan Chatel, attended the event in person and shares his experience.
I’m back from Directions North America 2026 in Orlando, one of the largest events in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central ecosystem—and one thing is clear: we are entering a new era.
This year, Microsoft didn’t simply talk about adding AI to ERP solutions. The message was far more ambitious. The goal is now to completely transform how organizations work, make decisions, automate processes, and collaborate. And at the center of this transformation: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
The ERP Is No Longer Just a Management System
For many years, ERP systems were primarily seen as systems of record:
- recording transactions
- managing finances
- tracking operations
Today, Microsoft is positioning Business Central as a true system of action. In other words, the ERP should no longer just store data—it should actively contribute to execution.
Through the integration of:
- Copilot
- AI Agents
- Microsoft 365
- Power Platform
- multi-agent orchestration
Business Central is gradually evolving into a central nervous system for intelligent operations for small and mid-sized businesses.
A Major Theme: AI Agents
One of the most striking concepts presented during the event was the evolution toward AI agents. Microsoft explained that we have moved:
- from simple AI prompting (“ask ChatGPT a question”)
- to agents capable of taking action
- and now to collaborative multi-agent systems
Practically speaking, this means that multiple AI agents can now:
- analyze a situation
- retrieve data
- propose decisions
- execute certain tasks
- collaborate with one another
- and iterate until a final outcome is achieved
Microsoft even demonstrated a fully agent-driven vision of software development, referred to as Agentic Engineering, where AI agents:
- analyze requirements
- create specifications
- generate test plans
- develop code
- perform validations
- automatically create sandbox environments
The message was strong:
“The bottleneck is no longer the code. The bottleneck is now the time between idea and execution.”
Business Central Is Becoming an AI-First Platform
Microsoft also introduced several AI innovations built directly into Business Central, including:
- intelligent suggestions
- conversational analytics
- sales agents
- AP/AR agents
- automated content generation
- natural-language data analysis
- workflow automation
Microsoft’s objective is clear: reduce the “toggle tax”—the time lost switching between applications. According to Microsoft, employees switch applications approximately 1,200 times per day, resulting in several hours of lost productivity each week. The strategy is to embed intelligence directly into the flow of work.
What This Means for Microsoft Partners
Another key message from the event was aimed at ERP partners like us. Microsoft was very transparent: traditional ERP project models will evolve rapidly.
AI could enable partners to:
- automate a significant portion of technical tasks
- reduce certain implementation efforts
- accelerate migrations
- automatically generate documentation
- automate testing
- significantly improve consultant productivity
As a result, partners will likely need to evolve toward:
- greater vertical specialization
- stronger intellectual property (IP)
- increased automation
- higher business value delivery
- more outcome-driven approaches
The future may no longer be about simply selling billable hours, but rather about providing:
- accelerators
- AI agents
- vertical solutions
- measurable business outcomes
What This Means in Practice for Companies Like Ours—and Our Clients
For us, this reflection is very real.
Like many Microsoft partners, we support organizations at different stages of their digital transformation. Some still run their financial operations on Dynamics GP, while others are beginning or accelerating their transition to Business Central. Our role is not just to follow technology trends, but to understand when, where, and how these innovations can truly generate business value.
At the same time, we are actively evaluating how new capabilities around AI, Copilot, and automation can concretely support both our teams and our customers.
Microsoft Is Investing Heavily in the Ecosystem
Directions 2026 also demonstrated Microsoft’s continued strong investment in Business Central:
- strong product growth
- accelerated momentum in the SMB market
- co-sell programs
- partner incentives
- AI initiatives
- marketing campaigns
- partner funding
The overall message was clear: Business Central continues to gain strategic importance within the Dynamics 365 ecosystem.
A Key Question for Quebec SMBs
For Quebec SMBs, the question is likely no longer whether AI will become part of operations, but rather where it will deliver value first:
- finance
- sales
- customer service
- procurement
- automation of repetitive tasks
- decision support
Each organization moves at its own pace, and technological maturity varies widely. What matters most is not following trends, but identifying use cases that deliver concrete and measurable gains.
Key Takeaways from Directions North America 2026
Three major conclusions stand out for me:
1. AI Is No Longer Futuristic
It is becoming an operational reality that organizations will need to understand, test, and integrate thoughtfully.
2. Business Central Is Becoming Much More Than an ERP
It is evolving into an intelligent platform for management, automation, and decision-making.
3. Partners Must Evolve as Well
Before fully guiding our clients through this transition, we must also rethink how we integrate these new capabilities into our practices, services, and operations.
Conclusion
Directions North America 2026 likely marks a significant turning point in the evolution of the Microsoft Dynamics ecosystem.
We appear to be shifting from a model primarily focused on ERP implementation toward one centered on intelligent automation of business operations.
One thing is certain: the months ahead will be particularly exciting for organizations looking to better understand how to leverage Business Central, AI, and automation—at the right pace and for the right reasons.
Very much looking forward to what the coming months will bring in the world of Microsoft, Business Central, and AI.
